AUA Fundamentals in Urology Hands-on Skills Training (formerly AUA Intern Academy) provides a standardized and foundational training for junior urology residents (PGY1s) and advanced practice providers in clinical and interpersonal communication skills!
Fundamentals in Urology offers both in-person Hands-on Skills Training and Virtual Didactic components to provide learners an introduction to foundational, evidence-based urology and opportunities to network with their peers. The in-person Hands-on Skills Training will be held on August 24-25, 2024 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Skills Training Objectives:
- Provide a standardized and foundational course for junior residents and advanced practice providers to introduce them to urology.
- Provide a course that complements the efforts of individual residency programs.
- Deliver a uniform curriculum to ensure baseline proficiency to improve patient safety.
- Provide an opportunity to network with peers.
This one and a half day training consists of six total simulations. Five focus on clinical skills: priapism, surgical skills, catheters and bladder ultrasound, endoscopy, and ultrasound, and one focuses on interpersonal and communication skills.

Hands-on Skills Training Simulations
This one and a half day training consists of six simulations. Five focus on clinical skills and one on interpersonal and communication skills. Simulation details are further outlined below. Participants will complete all simulations during the training. Each participant will receive a customized schedule upon arrival at Registration.
1. Catheters & Bladder Ultrasound - 2 hours
Introduction to Catheters – foley, nephrostomy, suprapubic
Patient Prep and Insertion – foley, nephrostomy, suprapubic
Catheter Placement, Irrigation, and Removal – hands-on demo and simulation
Difficult Foley Management – hands-on demo and simulation
Bladder Scan and Bladder Volume Estimation
2. Endoscopy - 2 hours
Ureteroscopy – 1 hour
Instrument Overview
Pass up wire, dual lumen catheter, second wire, ureteral access sheath, stone basket small stone
Cystoscopy – 1 hour
Cart Overview – introduction to scopes and instruments (flexible, rigid, portable cystoscopes)
Full Diagnostic Cystoscopy (Urethra, bladder, bladder neck, prostatic urethra ) with retroflexion
Cannulate ureteral orifice and Stent placement
Advance wire in right ureteric orifice; grab stent in left ureteric orifice
3. Ultrasound - 2 hours
Basic Knobology
Abdominal – renal (obtain kidney measurement and identify upper and lower pole and lesion and stone; drive needle into collecting system)
Suprapubic needle insertion under ultrasound guidance
Ultrasound-guided biopsy – prostate (includes introduction to transperineal biopsy)
4. Surgical Skills - 90 Minutes
Knot tying
Suturing (mattress sutures, straight line and repair with subcuticular, 2-layer closure with large ellipsoid)
Incision and drainage
Patient positioning and preparation
5. Priapism - 90 Minutes
Management
Irrigation
Injection
6. lnterpersonal & Communication Skills - 90 Minutes
Guided role play scenarios – learners will play both patient and practitioner
Possible Scenarios:
Counseling a patient
Obtaining informed consent
Specialty consult
Delivering bad news

The Flats of Cleveland was once a thriving entertainment district but is currently under redevelopment. You can find a few popular bars around the Flats and attractions like the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. Watersport rentals are offered in this district during the summer for access along the Cuyahoga River, and there are river and lake cruises that begin here.

CANCELLATION POLICY
AUA Education & Research reserves the right to cancel any portion of this activity if a minimum enrollment is not reached before July 12, 2024. If AUA Education & Research cancels any portion of this activity, notification will be sent by July 19, 2024.
Live Courses: An administrative fee of 15% is assessed if registration is cancelled up to six weeks prior to the course. If registration is cancelled four to six weeks from the course, the cancellation fee is 50% of the registration fee paid. No registration fees will be refunded less than four weeks prior to the course.
Registration Transfer: Customers switching from an option of lesser value to a higher value will be required to pay the difference in cost between the two options. Switching to an option of lesser value from a higher value must be made no later than to six weeks prior to the course and will be subject to an administrative fee of 15% of the cost of the course from which they are transferring. Transfer of registration from a higher value option to an option of lesser value past six weeks prior to the course will not receive a refund.
