Fundamentals in Urology offers both in-person Hands-on Skills Training and Virtual Didactic components to provide learners an introduction to foundational, evidence-based urology and opportunities to network with their peers. 


Hands-on Skills Training

The in-person Hands-on Skills Training will be held on August 24-25, 2024 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Skills Training aims to:

  • Provide a standardized and foundational course for junior residents and advanced practice providers to introduce them to urology.

  • Provide a course that complements the efforts of individual residency programs.

  • Deliver a uniform curriculum to ensure baseline proficiency to improve patient safety.

  • Provide an opportunity to network with peers.

This one and a half day training consists of six total simulations. Five focus on clinical skills: priapism, surgical skills, catheters and bladder ultrasound, endoscopy, and ultrasound, and one focuses on interpersonal and communication skills.

Virtual Didactic Series

This Virtual Didactic Series consists of 15 on-demand modules. Each session features case-based content with "take-home" clinical pearls of wisdom. 

This program aims to:

  • Provide a standardized and foundational course for early career residents and APPs to introduce them to urology..
  • Deliver a uniform curriculum to ensure baseline proficiency to improve patient safety.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the Fundamentals in Urology Hands-on Skills Training and Virtual Didactic Series, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify fundamental urologic conditions and appropriate treatments in clinical settings.
  2. Apply standardized and foundational urologic skills to their residency practice to ensure baseline proficiency and improve patient safety.
  3. Recognize the characteristics and habits of successful interns and residents.

Fundamentals in Urology Offerings


Hands-on Skills Training

This one and a half day training consists of six simulations.  Five focus on clinical skills and one on interpersonal and communication skills. Simulation details are further outlined below.

  1. Catheters & Bladder Ultrasound - 2 hours

  • Introduction to Catheters – foley, nephrostomy, suprapubic
  • Patient Prep and Insertion – foley, nephrostomy, suprapubic
  • Catheter Placement, Irrigation, and Removal – hands-on demo and simulation
  • Difficult Foley Management – hands-on demo and simulation
  • Bladder Scan and Bladder Volume Estimation
  1. Endoscopy - 2 hours
  • Ureteroscopy – 1 hour
    • Instrument Overview
    • Pass up wire, dual lumen catheter, second wire, ureteral access sheath, stone basket small stone
  • Cystoscopy – 1 hour
    • Cart Overview – introduction to scopes and instruments (flexible, rigid, portable cystoscopes)
    • Full Diagnostic Cystoscopy (Urethra, bladder, bladder neck, prostatic urethra ) with retroflexion
    • Cannulate ureteral orifice and Stent placement
    • Advance wire in right ureteric orifice; grab stent in left ureteric orifice
  1. Ultrasound - 2 hours
  • Basic Knobology
  • Abdominal – renal (obtain kidney measurement and identify upper and lower pole and lesion and stone; drive needle into collecting system)
  • Suprapubic needle insertion under ultrasound guidance
  • Ultrasound-guided biopsy – prostate (includes introduction to transperineal biopsy)
  1. Surgical Skills - 90 Minutes
  • Knot tying
  • Suturing (mattress sutures, straight line and repair with subcuticular, 2-layer closure with large ellipsoid)
  • Incision and drainage
  • Patient positioning and preparation
  1. Priapism - 90 Minutes
  • Management
  • Irrigation
  • Injection
  1. lnterpersonal & Communication Skills - 90 Minutes
  • Guided role play scenarios – learners will play both patient and practitioner
  • Possible Scenarios:
  • Counseling a patient
  • Obtaining informed consent
  • Specialty consult
  • Delivering bad news

CANCELLATION POLICY

AUA Education & Research reserves the right to cancel any portion of this activity if a minimum enrollment is not reached before July 12, 2024. If AUA Education & Research cancels any portion of this activity, notification will be sent by July 19, 2024.

Live Courses: An administrative fee of 15% is assessed if registration is cancelled up to six weeks prior to the course. If registration is cancelled four to six weeks from the course, the cancellation fee is 50% of the registration fee paid. No registration fees will be refunded less than four weeks prior to the course.

Registration Transfer: Customers switching from an option of lesser value to a higher value will be required to pay the difference in cost between the two options. Switching to an option of lesser value from a higher value must be made no later than to six weeks prior to the course and will be subject to an administrative fee of 15% of the cost of the course from which they are transferring. Transfer of registration from a higher value option to an option of lesser value past six weeks prior to the course will not receive a refund.
