Urologic Care for the Advanced Practice Provider Webcast (2017)

Member only benefit! The purpose of this activity is to educate the urologic APN/PA, allied health professional and novice and seasoned nurse. Topics to be addressed include urolithiasis, infections, testosterone replacement therapy, infertility, BPH/LUTS and urodynamics.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this activity, participants will be able to: 

Session I: Urolithiasis 

  1. Discuss national epidemiology, costs to the U.S. for the treatment of stone disease and highlights of epidemiology in a population who are post-bariatric surgery. 
  2.  Compare standard AUA Guidelines and common diagnostic modalities, including the use of obsolescent studies like retrograde pyelograms and IVP. 
  3. Review AUA Guidelines for medical therapy (dietary, pharmacologic, preventative, and "expulsive") and follow-up care. 
  4.  Discuss radiological backup, percutaneous procedures, urology residents, and ESWL in comparison to the AUA Guidelines for the Surgical Management of Stones. 

Session II: Infections 

  1. Discuss diagnosis and treatment of UTIs using evidence-based practice. 
  2.  Use evidence-based practice to discuss diagnosis and treatment of STIs. 
  3.  Summarize the state of the science in treating men with urologic chronic pelvic pain syndrome and chronic orchialgia. 

Session III: Male Health 

  1. Identify vascular erectile dysfunction and the best means to work this up to determine the burden of subclinical cardiovascular disease. 
  2. Summarize the present knowledge and main concerns regarding the association of testosterone to major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and venous embolic events (DVT and PE). 
  3. Utilize the AUA Best Practice Statement on the Optimal Evaluation of the Infertile Male to describe the problem-focused history and physical, order and interpret applicable lab and imaging evaluation, identify patients best managed medically or surgically, and describe when to refer to sub-specialty care 
  4. Discuss differences in surgical approaches to BPH and properly stratify options for patients when engaging in pre-operative counseling based on patient priorities and clinical characteristics. 
  5. Describe at least 3 treatment options and side effect management for men with advanced prostate cancer. 

Session IV: Urodynamics 

  1. Define indications, contraindications and techniques of urodynamic testing, including physical aspects of the measurement of pressure, flow and EMG. 
  2. Review typical steps of multichannel urodynamic evaluation, including prestudy uroflowmetry, filling cystometry with abdominal leak point pressure testing or urethral pressure profilometry, and voiding pressure flow study. 
  3. Discuss principle-based approach to generating and interpreting clinically relevant findings from multichannel urodynamic testing.
