Botulinum Toxin: Why Use It, How to Do It, What are the Results? Webcast (2017)

This course is designed for physicians who have considered using botulinum toxin injections to treat refractory voiding symptoms but have not yet performed the procedure. The goal is to provide practical information to the physician which includes: use of botulinum toxin in neurogenic and non-neurogenic voiding disorders, mechanism of action, injection techniques for bladder, urethral sphincter, and prostate, the safe handling of the agent and potential complications of injections. Video demonstration of techniques and method of action will be included. Note: this activity will include the discussion of off-label use of botulinum toxin.

Learning Objectives

After attending this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Cite the mechanism of action of botulinum toxin
  2. Describe the role of the toxin as a form of treatment for the bladder, sphincter, and prostate
  3. Identify limitations and potential complications of botulinum toxin treatment
  4. Examine patient types who may benefit from treatment with botulinum toxin treatment
  5. Compare and contrast injection techniques
