This symposium will be a novel, interdisciplinary meeting where premier kidney stone researchers, along with experts in nephrology, can come together with experts in biomedical engineering, physics, chemistry, artificial intelligence, and medical device design and development with the aim of “thinking outside the box” in the search for advances in kidney stone treatment. A critical aspect of the StoneLab Symposium is the delivery of talks from outside the normal realm of kidney stone research by leading basic scientists, followed by discussions led by kidney stone researchers and surgeons with the intent to spur the development of collaborations and the generation of new ideas and avenues for exploration.

This meeting will explore solutions for the most pressing translational science issues facing kidney stone researchers today, present research in interdisciplinary fields that might be leveraged for new research to improve treatment of kidney stone disease, and help identify future funding needs and growth areas for kidney stone research.

The four focus areas of this meeting are:

1. stone formation and biology,
2. surgical technology and engineering to break stones,
3. artificial intelligence and big data applications for kidney stone treatment, and
4. how to advance and fund innovative research.
