Doppler and Advanced Techniques in Urologic Ultrasound Prerequisite (2017)

The advanced urologic ultrasound course is designed for participants who have a basic understanding of the physics of ultrasound and some experience with clinical scanning.  This course teaches the physics of Doppler ultrasound and how to use physical principles to improve image quality and understand ultrasound artifacts.  The course is important for those urologists seeking to improve their ultrasound expertise in the operating room and in the office.

The Doppler and advanced techniques presented in this video will instruct participants in the physics, machine settings,  and techniques for performing  power, color and spectral Doppler ultrasound in the practice of urology. The use of ALARA in the performance of Doppler ultrasound will be discussed. The advanced features of ultrasound  will be demonstrated with an eye toward practical utilization in the office and operating room settings. The clinical indications for the performance of Doppler ultrasound will be presented.

This activity satisfies the AIUM requirement – “The physician should complete 10 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ specific to genitourinary ultrasound every 3 years.”

Target Audience

  • Urologists
  • Urology Residents

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, the participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the clinical indications for the performance color, power and/or spectral Doppler ultrasound.
  2. Describe the steps for calculating resistive indices and interpreting the results.
  3. State the principles associated with ALARA for the use of ultrasound.
