Rafael Sanchez-Salas, MD

Dr. Rafael Sanchez-Salas is a globally recognized surgeon and clinician-scientist specializing in minimally invasive approaches to urological oncology. A pioneer in Focal Therapy for Localized Prostate Cancer, he has been pivotal in advancing this innovative treatment approach. Currently serving as the President of the Focal Therapy Society, Dr. Sanchez-Salas continues to shape the future of prostate cancer care.
Graduating as Valedictorian from the Universidad de los Andes in Mérida, Venezuela, Dr. Sanchez-Salas obtained his medical degree in 1998. He completed his surgical and urological training at the Universidad Central de Venezuela in 2005. His passion for advancing the field of urology led him to pursue fellowships in urological oncology and minimally invasive surgery at prestigious institutions such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (USA), Clinica Santa Maria (Chile), and L’Institut Mutualiste Montsouris (France), supported by competitive scholarships from the Confederation Americana de Urologia and the European Association of Urology.
In 2008, Dr. Sanchez-Salas joined the faculty at L’Institut Mutualiste Montsouris, where he made significant contributions to robotic surgery and the development of partial gland ablation techniques for prostate cancer. As a mentor and program leader, he helped cultivate a new generation of urological surgeons through his leadership in the fellowship program. He remained at the forefront of innovation in prostate cancer care until 2021 when he transitioned to McGill University.
At McGill University, Dr. Sanchez-Salas focuses his clinical and research efforts on localized prostate cancer and minimally invasive surgical techniques. His research explores the impact of focal therapy on the prostatic microenvironment and long-term patient outcomes, contributing to a growing body of knowledge in this transformative area of urological oncology.
In addition to his clinical and research responsibilities, Dr. Sanchez-Salas is an active leader in the global urological community. He serves on the Executive Boards of the Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU) and the Confederacion Americana de Urologia (CAU). A founding member of the Focal Therapy Society (FTS), he currently serves as its President. He is also a member of the editorial boards for “European Urology Focus,” “The Journal of Endourology,” and “Actas Españolas de Urologia,” and frequently reviews for leading urological and oncological journals.
