Intern Academy (2023)
THE AUA INTERN ACADEMY HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE EARLY CAREER UROLOGY RESIDENT AND INCLUDES TWO DAYS OF HANDS-ON SKILLS TRAINING AND AN ENGAGING LECTURE SERIES! REGISTER EARLY AS SKILLS TRAINING SPOTS ARE LIMITED!
The AUA Intern Academy is a new initiative created specifically to meet the needs of early career urology residents (primarily PGY1s) and will include both in-person (Hands-on Skills Training) and virtual components. The aim of the Intern Academy is to apply standardized and foundational urologic skills to the first year of residency practice in order to improve clinical proficiency and promote patient safety.
Attendees can choose between three options:
- Virtual Didactic Series Only
- Hands-on Skills Training Only
- Hands-on Skills Training + Virtual Didactic Series -- Most Popular Option!
The 2-day in-person Hands-on Skills Training will be held on June 10-11, 2023 at the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. The training includes several clinical scenarios that the urologic intern may find themselves encountering in real life. It includes six critical stations that will serve to provide the urologic intern with valuable experience in a controlled setting before they are encountered in the emergency room, ward, or operating room. The Hands-on Skills Training consists of 6 critical urologic skills stations focusing on catheters, endoscopy, surgical skills, priapism, ultrasound, and communication skills.
The Virtual Didactic Series will feature high yield weekly topics every Wednesday from July 5 - September 27, 2023. Each session will feature interactive and case-based content with "take-home" clinical pearls of wisdom. Participants will engage with course Faculty and each other live on Swapcard. If you can't attend live, you will be able to access the content on-demand at your convenience.
Both options include an exclusive and dynamic Intern Academy virtual community to post discussions, answer questions, share resources, and engage with colleagues!
The program has the following goals to meet the needs of early career urology residents:
- Provide a standardized and foundational course for early career residents to introduce them to urology.
- Provide a course that complements the efforts of individual residency programs.
- Deliver a uniform curriculum to ensure baseline proficiency to improve patient safety.
- Provide an opportunity for early career residents to begin networking with peers.
Resident Programs Starting in June 2023 |
For resident programs that start in June, the AUA recommends registering incoming PGY1 residents for both the Hands-on Skills Training occurring on June 10-11, 2023 in Cleveland, Ohio and the Virtual Didactic Series (July – September 2023) for the most comprehensive experience. They will also receive access to the virtual community, providing a networking opportunity to share resources and discussions. |
Resident Programs Starting in July 2023 |
For resident programs that start in July, the AUA recommends registering current first year residents (PGY1 going to PGY2) for the Hands-on Skills Training being held on June 10-11, 2023 in Cleveland, Ohio and if funding allows, registering them for the Virtual Didactic Series (July – September 2023).
Additionally, the AUA recommends registering incoming PGY1 residents for the Virtual Didactic Series.
Note: Residents who participate in the Virtual Didactic Series only in 2023 will be placed on a priority list for the 2024 Hands-on Skills Training and will be able to register before it opens to the public. |

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the Intern Academy, participants will be able to:
- Increase fund of knowledge about foundational and applied urology topics that will improve patient care and allow participants to excel as interns
- Apply standardized and foundational urologic skills to their residency practice to ensure baseline proficiency and improve patient safety.
- Recognize the characteristics and habits of successful interns and residents.
- Identify opportunities to network and build community with their peers.
Hands-on Skills Training - Station Rotations
The underlined text are the titles of the stations, and the bullet points below them show the specific skills that will be demonstrated in those stations. There are five (5) clinical stations and one (1) non-clinical station. There will be three rotations of two hours each day Saturday and Sunday.
- Station 1: Catheters
- Introduction to catheters – Foley, nephrostomy, suprapubic
- Patient prep and insertion – Foley, nephrostomy, suprapubic
- Catheter placement, irrigation, and removal- Hands-on Demo and Simulation
- Difficult Foley management – Hands-on Demo and Simulation
- Station 2: Endoscopy
- Ureteroscopy – 1 hour
- Instrument Orientation
- Pass up wire, dual lumen catheter, second wire, ureteral access sheath, stone basket small stone
- Cystoscopy – 1 hour
- Cart overview – introduction to scopes and instruments (flexible, rigid, portable cystoscopes)
- Full diagnostic cystoscopy (Urethra, bladder, bladder neck, prostatic urethra ) with retroflexion
- Cannulate a ureteral orifice and Stent placement
- Advance wire in right ureteric orifice; grab stent in left ureteric orifice
- Station 3: Surgical Skills
- Knot tying
- Suturing (mattress sutures, straight line and repair with subcuticular, 2-layer closure with large ellipsoid)
- Incision and drainage
- Patient positioning and preparation
- Station 4: Priapism
- Management, irrigation, injection
- Station 5: Ultrasound
- Basic – Knobology
- Abdominal – renal (obtain kidney measurement and identify upper and lower pole and lesion and stone; drive needle into collecting system)
- Suprapubic needle insertion under ultrasound guidance
- Bladder scan and bladder volume estimation
- Ultrasound-guided biopsy – prostate (includes introduction to transperineal biopsy)
- Station 6: Non-Clinical –Communication skills via role-play
- Four scenarios for role play – learners will play both patient and practitioner

CANCELLATION POLICY
AUA Education & Research reserves the right to cancel any portion of this activity if a minimum enrollment is not reached before May 7, 2023. If AUA Education & Research cancels any portion of this activity, notification will be sent by May 16, 2023.
Live Courses: An administrative fee of 15% is assessed if registration is cancelled up to six weeks prior to the course. If registration is cancelled four to six weeks from the course, the cancellation fee is 50% of the registration fee paid. No registration fees will be refunded less than four weeks prior to the course.
Webcast: Cancellations must be made no later than one week prior to the live course. Subscription fees will not be refunded after the cancellation period. Purchases after the live course date are not eligible for a refund.
Registration Transfer: Customers switching from an option of lesser value to a higher value will be required to pay the difference in cost between the two options. Switching to an option of lesser value from a higher value must be made no later than to six weeks prior to the course and will be subject to an administrative fee of 15% of the cost of the course from which they are transferring. Transfer of registration from a higher value option to an option of lesser value past six weeks prior to the course will not receive a refund.
