She was originally raised in southern California, but moved to Boston for her undergraduate training. She graduated from Wellsley College with  a BA in Spanish Literature and subsequently went on to receive her medical degree at the University of Colorado. She completed her Ob/Gyn Residency at Oregon Health and Science University. Her research interests include the impact of substance use on female reproductive health and the in utero environment.
