Michael Cookson, MD
Michael S. Cookson, MD, MMHC, FACS is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He holds the Donald D. Albers Endowed Chair in Urology, the University of Oklahoma David Ross Boyd Professorship, and serves as the inaugural Associate Chief Physician Executive for OU Health and Deputy Director and Chief Surgical Officer for the Stephenson Cancer Center.
Dr. Cookson earned a BA in Journalism with honors from the University of Oklahoma in 1984, followed by his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 1988. He completed his residency in Urology at the University of Texas, San Antonio, and a fellowship in Urologic Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. After serving on faculty at the University of Kentucky and spending 15 years at Vanderbilt University, Dr. Cookson returned to his alma mater in 2013 to lead the Department of Urology and develop the Prostate and Urologic Cancer Team at the Stephenson Cancer Center. Under his leadership, the Stephenson Cancer Center’s prostate and urologic cancer service line has become one of the top programs in the nation, recognized for integrating advanced screening, early detection, clinical pathways, guideline enhancement, and minimally invasive surgical treatment for urologic cancers.
In 2025, Dr. Cookson was elected as a Trustee of the American Board of Urology (ABU), following nomination by the American Urological Association (AUA). His six-year term began in March 2025. Nationally, Dr. Cookson has contributed extensively to urologic education and policy. He has served on the AUA/ABU Examination Committee and within the Society for Urologic Oncology (SUO), co-developing the Oncology Knowledge Assessment Examination (OKAT). He chaired the AUA’s Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer (CRPC) Guidelines Panel and was Vice Chair of the AUA-SUO Advanced Prostate Cancer Guidelines Panel. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of the AUA Update Series and was Co-Editor of Urology Times from 2021 to 2022. Dr. Cookson is Past President of the Society of Urologic Oncology and Past President of the South-Central Section of the AUA. He is a member of both the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons, one of only 70 academic urologists nationally to be awarded this membership, and the Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons. An internationally recognized researcher and lecturer, Dr. Cookson is the author of over 270 peer-reviewed journal publications and 34 textbook chapters. His contributions to the field of urologic oncology have earned him national and international acclaim.
