Willie Underwood, MD, FACS, MPH, MSc
Willie Underwood, III, MD, Msc, MPH is the Executive Director of Buffalo Center for Health Equity and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association, member of the Board of Directors of HealthNow and member of the Board of Commissioners of Joint Commission. He continues his clinical practice providing assistance to understaffed health system as a locum tenens urologist. He is Co-founder of KAPS Biotechnology. He was previosly an Associate Professor of Oncology, Department of Urology. Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He received his undergraduate degree in Biology from Morehouse College, Atlanta, GA in 1988. He received his Doctorate of Medicine and Masters of Science in Anatomy and Cellular Biology degrees from State University of New York, Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, NY in 1994. He completed his residency training in surgery and urology at University of Connecticut Health Center, Farmington, CT in 2000. He completed a MPH degree in Health Management and Policy from the University of Michigan, School of Public Health in 2004 and the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program in 2002. He has received several awards and honors. He received AUA Rising Star Award, Robert Wood Johnson Harold Amos Medical Career Development Award, just to name a few. His research interests include, but are not limited to, racial disparities in the diagnosis, treatment, and survival of urologic cancers. He has received independent R01 and U54 funding from NIH/NCI to study race, prostate cancer treatment and treatment decision difficulty and regret and to establish the Western New York Cancer Coalition (WNYC2) Center to Reduce Disparities. He has co-authored over 100 peer review publications, published abstracts and book chapters. Dr. Underwood is a community and healthcare leader. He is the past chair of the Council on Legislation for the American Medical Association, previous member the AUA Public Policy Council, and past President of the Erie County Medical Society.
