As of October 2018 Dr. McVary joined the faculty at Stritch School of Medicine, Loyola University Medical Center as a Director of the Center for Male Health and Professor in the Department of Urology. Prior to that he was Professor and Chair of Urology at SIU for 6 years. Dr. McVary has been professor of urology at Northwestern University Medical School (NUMS) in Chicago (2005-13). He was associate professor at NU (1996-2005) and assistant professor (1989-1996). He was attending staff urologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) in Chicago (1989-2012) and attending surgeon at VA Lakeside (1989-2007), and chief of urology at both the VA Lakeside Medical Center in Chicago (1995-2005) and VA Crown Point Ambulatory Care Center in Chicago (1989-2003). He founded and directed the Center for Sexual Health at NMH (1989-2012). He founded and directed the Prostate Diseases Minimally Invasive Program (1998-2012) and founded and directed the Andrology Fellowship Program at NMH (2003-12).

McVary completed a urology research fellowship at Northwestern University Medical School (1988) and residencies in general surgery and urology at NMH (1985, 1989). He graduated cum laude and a Marcy Scholar with a bachelor’s degree in biology from Northwestern University and also received his M.D. degree from NUMS (1979, 1983).

McVary is board certified by the American Board of Urology and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He has published more than 400 original peer-reviewed articles in medical journals and written four books and more than 25 book chapters on his research interests in urology. An investigator in prostatic disorders, prostate cancer, andrology and erectile dysfunction (ED), McVary has been principal investigator for more than 120 clinical trials, including many for the National Institutes of Health.

His primary clinical areas are prostate diseases, including prostate cancer and BPH, as well as the evaluation and treatment of sexual function. He currently serves as the associate editor for the Journal of Urology. McVary holds several positions with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and was an honorary speaker for the European Association of Urology (EAU) and Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA). He is chairman of the International Committee for Urologic Diseases (ICUD), Co-Chair of the AUA 2016 BPH Clinical Guidelines and a co-chair of the NIH/NIDDK Strategic Planning Committee for Prostate Research/Men’s Health.
