Dr. Lange is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Urology at University of Washington (UW) in Seattle where he served as chair for 19 years.. He received his medical degree from Washington University. He subsequently received residency, fellowship and research training at the National Institutes of Health, Duke University, and the University of Minnesota. Dr. Lange has served on many editorial and administrative boards, including that of the New England Journal of Medicine and the American Board of Urology. Dr. Lange is internationally recognized for his clinical and research work in a variety of genitourinary cancers, including prostate, testis, bladder and kidney. Of particular note, he helped implement the serum markers for testis (AFP, HCG) and prostate (PSA) cancers. While at the University of Minnesota, he participated in launching the field of endourology. He has authored of over 400 scientific papers and 3 books. He trained many people who now are professors or chairmen of urology programs though out the world. He is founding director emeritus of the Institute for Prostate Cancer Research (IPCF), a world-renowned organization of scientists and physicians at UW Medicine and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Lange has received many national awards for his work including the Huggins Medal from the Society of Urologic Oncology) in 2011, in 2014 the Life Time Achievement Award from the Prostate Cancer Foundation, in 2015 the Distinguished Member Award from the Western American Urology Association (AUA)., in 2016 the "Golden Cane Award" from the national AUA for outstanding career achievements, and in 2017 the Keys Medal from the American Association of GU Surgeons , the AUA's Distinguished Mentor Award, and the Distinguished Career Award from the Society of International Urology.
