V5-06: INITIAL EXPERIENCE DURING DEVELOPMENT OF LAPAROSCOPIC 12MM HIFU PROBE

INTRODUCTION
High Intensity Focal Ultrasound(HiFU) has largely been referenced as a focal therapy for prostate adenocarcinoma. Recently, a prototype laparoscopic HiFU probe has been developed for the treatment of renal tumors. We present our initial experience with this emerging technology.
METHODS
Four patients between the ages of 45 and 69 were consented for laparoscopic HiFU tumor ablation followed by standard partial nephrectomy. Renal masses were isolated, exophytic, tumors less than 2.5 cm.
RESULTS
Final pathology revealed negative margins in all patients. Three patients had pT1a tumors with clear cell in two and papillary in one patient. The fourth patient had an oncocytoma. All specimens had evidence of tissue change consistent with ablation.
CONCLUSION
Preliminary results with laparoscopic HiFU renal tumor ablation are promising. Further development of this technology is needed before any comparative studies can be carried out, but, HiFU ablation may have the potential to become a non-invasive surgical option in the management of renal tumors.
