V11-03: Extraperitoneal laparoscopic approach and technology for resection of complicate retroperitoneal tumor in supine position

Video

Introductions and Objectives
To investigate a modified extraperitoneal laparoscopic approach and technology for resection of complicate retroperitoneal tumor.

Methods
Ten patients with retroperitoneal tumors from a single institution underwent extraperitoneal laparoscopic resection of tumor. All patients were placed in supine position and tilted up 15 degrees on the affected side. Extraperitoneal space of the flank between the 11th rib and iliac crest was set up and 4 trocars were introduced. Tumor was gradually dissected in extraperitoneal space.

Results
Retroperitoneal tumor resection was successfully performed in 10 patients (left, 4 patients; right, 5 patients; bilateral, 1 patient). The mean tumor size was 4.5¡À2.3cm. The mean total operative time was 90¡À46 minutes. The mean blood loss was 110¡À96 ml. No serious intraoperative complication occurred. The mean postoperative intestinal function was 1.5 days. The mean postoperative hospitalization was 3.2¡À1.1 days

Conclusions
Extraperitoneal laparoscopic approach is safe and feasible for resection of complicate retroperitoneal tumor that provides minimal invasion and rapid recovery for patients.
